What is Biblical "Fundamentalism"?

The term “Fundamentalist” today has come to make one think of the Islamic terrorist of our current events. The word fundamental is neither a bad word nor does it hold a bad connotation in the right setting. For instance, sports teams who adhere to the fundamentals of the game are not thought of as extremist, rather as those who are diligent in the proper understanding or “how to” of the game. Biblical Fundamentalism, like the sports illustration, has a proper understanding of the fundamentals of the Bible and seeks to share Christ love and truth in this Biblical way. Biblical Fundamentalist simply believes and follows the Biblical Fundamentals of Christianity.

Biblical Fundamentalism is a theological movement that came about as a result of inroads that the modernist movement had made into churches and society at the turn of the twentieth century. The term comes from articles that were written by numerous authors between 1910 and 1915 to refute the modernist liberal agenda. These articles were entitled, "The Fundamentals: A Testimony To Truth." As a result of the opposition to modernism and the movement it had become, a magazine editor named Curtis Lee Law coined the name and term Fundamentalism.

The Fundamentals of the Faith are some times used in reference to numerous tenets but the seven most common I have listed here.

  1. The Inerrancy of the Scriptures
  2. The Truth of the Trinity
  3. The Deity of Jesus Christ
  4. The Virgin Birth of Jesus Christ
  5. The Substitutionary Atonement of Jesus Christ on the Cross
  6. The Bodily Resurrection and Glorious Ascension of Jesus Christ
  7. The Premillenial Second Coming Of Jesus Christ
